When you travel, you have to be prepared for the unexpected, and probably, this is part of the fun. Yet to face the unexpected before you even land at your destination takes some beating! I unexpectedly had to enter Thailand, paying a 60 USD visa fee for 2 hours to collect luggage that couldn’t transfer, and then, to add to my travel tiredness, I had to pay, only possible in Thai Baht, for the luggage I would take onwards to Vientiane. Ha.
It does feel like travel is coming with a greater risk these days. Not only do you have to skirt around a war zone (heartfelt warmth to those lovely Iranian people), but you also have to navigate in your imagination the number of planes in the sky at any one time. Skyscanner technology gives you the impression that planes cross the skies bumper to bumper. When in fact you are a mere 5 miles of separation! In the past, you only had to contend with your seated neighbour lighting up a cigarette, to the changrin of the air stewardess who put him in his place before you had to. Now, at least planes are smoke-free, but you have uneasy sleep thinking about the train of ants running across the sky. The plane directly in front of you and the one behind you running at 600mph, nipping at your butt. But, hey, better this than letting your imagination go to the missile and drone mayhem below your feet.
Despite all these travel perils, 21 hours later, I have arrived in Laos. 30 degrees and I can already smell the lotus flowers…..Bar 4 Lao Airlines planes on the tarmac, all others were Chinese Airlines. How refreshing to get away from the ‘West’ to a sea of different faces.

Now poolside at the hotel and plugged in to the sounds of the local ( not so tropical) birdlife…. 🙂

The house sparrow must be a global bird! 21 hours of travel, phew. You are a hardy woman. Looking forward to the next chapter from my pool side in Norfolk! (That’s a pool for the wildfowl rather than for me!)
