Leisurely Laos.

Central Asia has ‘a look’ all of its own. Widish roads, deep-set low pavements with striped edging indicating parking intentions, although often flaunted by parking your car full on to the pavement. Old buildings next to new, front-facing next to side-facing, some edged to the road, others set back. Temples next to hardware stores. All interspersed with lotus trees, palm trees and the odd bit of garbage. Above all else, the telltale signs are the wire cables running amok along the roadside, obscuring everything behind them. Lots of Asia now has gleaming cities to match Singapore’s, but the first impressions of Laos… yes, I recognise all this fabulousness.

Today was a day to just mouch around Vientiane and get a feel for the place and country, before the major sightseeing starts with a guide tomorrow. So a little look at the shops ( you can take the girl out of retail, but you cant take retail out of the girl!) and then a walk along the Mekong.

Culminating, lastly, on a visit to the Vientiane night food market. The food all looked and smelled so amazing, but this traveller decided to err on the side of caution, advisable on day one of a three-week trip. I will be back to this market though. I promise!
