I now realise that the most stressful part of any trip is the preparation and packing before you leave. The trip itself is the easy part.
I had hoped that my Namibia list would quickly steer me on what packing was needed, but the truth was very different. Going from a dry desert location to a sea/ rainforest adventure, with potentially cyclone conditions, clearly demands a different wardrobe. Yesterday, I had to race out to buy extra ‘bits’. So much so, that I now, irritatingly, have expanded to two pieces of luggage.
The wetsuit, fins, reef shoes, mask and snorkel are clear additions, but its the ‘mossie’ nets, triple doses of jungle strength ‘mossie’ spray, antihistamine creams and tablets that are filling the space.
Important replenishments from the last trip : Imodium, rehydration sachets and coffee. Not necessarily to be taken in that order…
So, how am I feeling about this trip? Pretty relaxed, I must say. Particularly now that my luggage is in the hold, and I am sitting at the airport in Istanbul. The second time feels easier, and the trepidation of the first time has been replaced with a new excitement. I am really look forward to being transported in to a new world.
Only the old niggles sit in the back of my brain cavities : those young nubile fellow volunteers, my thunderous snoring and a new factor, a fear of sea swimming.
First stop on tonight’s flight is Mauritius. If everyone gets off the plane there , and I am the only person flying on to Madagascar, be prepared for a change of plan. Next blog post could be me sipping Mai Tais on the beach of Le Touessarok.
